Rich Fruit Cake : Reminding me of my childhood.

I still remember the winters of my childhood, in Calcutta a decade back, the winters and mainly the advent of the New Year which was incomplete without a rich fruit cake from the city’s oldest and probably the last surviving Jewish bakery, Nahoum’s and sons, located in the New Market area. “Our rich fruit cake is internationally known,” said the owner Isaac Nahoum. Yes, the rich fruit cake is delicious and probably available online here.

Bûche de Noël: The French Christmas log cake

In France, Belgium, Quebec, New Brunswick, Vietnam, Lebanon and generally in French-speaking countries, the Christmas meal ends with a Christmas log cake called the Bûche de Noël. This culinary tradition is in fact related to the celebration of the winter solstice. This custom has been attested since the Medieval Ages and is inherited from various pagan rites. It is also widespread throughout Europe.

Sausage Cupcakes : For that special brunch.

A quick and simple idea for that occasional breakfast or brunch where you indulgence in good delicious food without bothering much about the calories. It is a cup cake, but not the sweet regular ones that we know about, it’s a cup cake with sausages in them. I must say I was inspired by salted cakes with ham and cheese in them which are rather popular in France. Here I removed the flour as well and thus my cup cakes are really simple and trust me, they are truly savory to start your mornings with.

Roasted chicken with a cider twist.

Festive season is in the air and it is that time of the year when we marinate and throw every type of bird meat in the oven, wishing for the perfect roasted bird. Of course of all the birds, the chicken is the most popular, so I thought of starting off the season with roasted chicken. Well, I did not roast a full chicken, as you can understand, we are just two people to devour the things I cook. However I got myself two breast pieces of free range chicken from our local farmers’ market, and I must say that even 800gm was a lot for the two of us over dinner. But we managed, rather we loved to finish it off completely the same day, may be because it was that perfect and that delicious. So here is the recipe for roasted chicken breasts and wishing you all a great festive season.

Pork chops stewed with apples.

Pork, apple and cinnamon are a classic combination. I do not need references to prove this universal fact. So I tried this combination in my kitchen, with a bit of my own innovation to add to it, the result is a tasty but simple to cook, requires very few ingredients and ideal for novice cooks who wish to create a classic delicacy with limited effort. Vin Chaud (Mulled Wine) to warm up this festive season.

It’s December and temperatures are dropping, so how about some Vin Chaud (Mulled Wine, the French name literally means Hot Wine) to warm ourselves. There are two advantages of making Mulled Wine, it is tasty and cozy and making it fills up the room with sweet smelling aromatics.

Celebrating with the Beaujolais Nouveau.

It has been already six years that I have relocated to France. By this time those of my friends who are a regular reader of my blog know my soft corner for Paris, the French culture and food. And of course wine production and tasting is the most widely known aspect of the French culture. There are different wine growing regions in France, the most important among them being Bordeaux, Bourgogne (Burgundy) and the neighboring Beaujolais, Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon, Alsace, Cote du Rhone, the Loire Valley and the sparkling wine region of Champagne.

Roscoff : Small town of character of Brittany

Mitra finished his thesis last year and for his successful defense of the thesis his colleagues gifted him among other things a Dakota Box. What is it? It is simply a gift box that offered one night stay with dinner for two persons, to choose from 360+ locations in France, Spain and Morocco. We being food lovers and my special liking for crepes and galettes and Mitra’s love for Kouign-amann, and given my preference for sea-side locations and Mitra’s wish of relaxing at a spa and sauna, we chose the spa resort of Hôtel Thalasstonic at Roscoff in the Brittany region of France. Amidst our busy schedules we managed to squeeze in 3 nights with a weekend (Saturday-Tuesday) and off we headed for our short but pleasurable vacation in Brittany.
